Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives

The intent of the Physician Compensation and Recruiting Review is to quantify financial and other incentives offered by our by hospitals, medical groups and other facilities to physician and advanced practitioner candidates during the course of recruitment. Unlike other surveys, Merritt Hawkins’ Review of Physician Recruiting Incentives tracks physician starting salaries and other prerequisites, rather than total annual physician compensation.

Top Five Most In-Demand Medical Specialties and Average Starting Medical Salaries Most in-demand

For the tenth consecutive year, family medicine physicians were number one on the list of Merritt Hawkins’ most requested physician recruiting assignments with an average starting physician salary of $225,000. Psychiatrists were second on the list, supplanting general internists, who had ranked second on the list for nine consecutive years.

The average starting salary for psychiatrists was $250,000. General Internists, also ranking in the top five most requested specialties, has a $237,000 average starting salary.

Combined advanced practitioners, including physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs), were fifth on the list of Merritt Hawkins’ most requested illustrating the advance of “team-based” care and the importance of having “the right provider at the right time.”
