Community Health Centers: A National Success Story
August 01, 2019
By Travis Singleton, EVP at Merritt Hawkins
Though the two sides of the political aisle currently
disagree on a variety of issues, there is at least one topic on which they are
able to see eye to eye: Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). Both major political
parties have historically supported FQHCs and their mission of providing
quality, affordable, and accessible care to traditionally underserved
As a result, there are a number of reasons to celebrate
during 2019’s National Health Center Week. FQHCs now serve more than 25 million
Americans annually, a number that continues to grow on a consistent basis.
FQHCs have compiled a significant record of success that includes the following:
- Producing $24 billion in annual health system
- Reducing unnecessary hospitalizations and
unnecessary visits to the emergency room
- Treating patients for a fraction of the average
cost of one emergency room visit
- Maintaining patient satisfaction levels of
nearly 100 percent
- Serving more than one in six Medicaid
beneficiaries for less than 2 percent of the national Medicaid budget
- Providing compassionate, accessible primary care
with an emphasis on prevention as well as critically needed behavioral health
care and dental care to millions of patients each year
Merritt Hawkins is a long-time
supporter of FQHCs and is proud to be a preferred partner of the National
Association of Community Health Center’s (NACHC) Value in Staffing (ViS)
Through ViS, Merritt Hawkins has
been able to partner with hundreds of FQHCs across the country, providing these
health centers with a practical roadmap to physician and advanced practitioner
recruiting. Applying more than 32 years of experience and expertise, we assist
FQHCs in creating effective recruiting programs featuring competitive incentive
packages, sound teamwork and communication, and an unrivaled candidate sourcing
system. In addition to shaping the recruiting plan, we also work with FQHCs
through every stage of the process, from opportunity evaluation to sourcing to
the interview and closing.
Most importantly, we understand
the service orientation of the FQHC model and focus on recruiting mission-driven
candidates who are compatible with the unique role FQHCs play as safety-net
providers for the underserved.
