New White Paper: Increasing Demand for Anesthesiologists

One of the many results of the COVID-19 pandemic was a decrease in demand for anesthesiologists. When elective procedures were shut down at many facilities, anesthesiologists experienced both diminished practice opportunities and income.

These effects were temporary, however, and demand for anesthesiologists is on the upswing. In part, this trend is being driven by a backlog of procedures caused by the Covid-19 shutdown. As was noted by the Harvard Review: "One recent study predicts that the post-pandemic backlog will exceed one million cases for spinal fusions and joint replacements in the field of orthopaedic surgery alone" (Covid-19 created an Elective Surgery Backlog. Harvard Review. August 10, 2020). Almost all of these backlogged procedures will require the use of anesthesiologists.

The growing demand for anesthesiology is examined in more detail in a new Merritt Hawkins’ white paper entitled, Supply, Demand and Recruiting Trends in Anesthesiology.

The white paper examines the development of anesthesiology as a specialty, education and training requirements for anesthesiologists, scope of practice in the specialty and how anesthesiologists typically work with certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). It also examines supply, demand and compensation trends in anesthesiology. The white paper concludes with recommendations for how hospitals, medical groups and other entities can best recruit these in-demand specialists.
