Supply, Demand and Recruiting Trends in Oncology

Trends in Oncology

By Phillip Miller

One of the great success stories in American medicine in recent years has been the progress made in treating cancers of virtually all types.
Several decades ago, a diagnosis of cancer often came with no hope of effective treatment. Today, a wide variety of treatments are available that can prolong life for years and in many cases, indefinitely.

According to a 2019 report from the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute, there now are an estimated 17 million cancer survivors in the U.S., a number that will increase to more than 22 million by 2030.

Oncologists and other healthcare professionals who treat cancer patients have played a major role in advancing cancer treatment. Due in part to their success, more of these professionals are needed to care for the growing number of cancer survivors. As in many other medical specialties, the supply of oncologists is not keeping pace with demand.

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) projects a shortage of 1,400 oncologists by 2025, while the American Society of Clinical Oncology reports that 10% of all oncologists in the U.S. practice in just three urban counties.

Merritt Hawkins addresses these and related issues in a new white paper entitled  Oncology: Supply, Demand and Recruiting Trends.
The white paper examines the development of oncology as a specialty, education and training requirements for oncologists, and scope of practice in the specialty. It also examines supply, demand and compensation trends in urology. The white paper concludes with recommendations for how hospitals, medical groups and other entities can best recruit these in-demand specialists.
