In recent decades, the birth rate among U.S. women has declined considerably. Nevertheless, demand for pediatricians remains strong.

What accounts for this apparent disconnect?

That question and others are addressed in a new Merritt Hawkins white paper entitled Supply, Demand and Recruiting Trends in Pediatrics.

The white paper addresses changing demographics and work patterns in pediatrics that have had the net effect of reducing full-time-equivalents (FTEs) in the specialty, inhibiting overall supply. It also includes data on the distribution of pediatricians and how geographic factors can affect supply and demand. Pediatrics compensation data from Merritt Hawkins and other sources are reviewed in the white paper, providing insight into current incentives being offered to recruit pediatricians.

The white paper notes that the most acute shortages in pediatrics occur in a variety of pediatric subspecialties. Due primarily to the small number of these types of physicians, recruiting pediatric subspecialists has become increasingly challenging.

The new white paper offers a timely resource for healthcare facilities seeking general pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists, as well as for those who follow physician workforce trends. Download your copy of the white paper by clicking here.
