New White Paper - Recruiting Trends in Dermatology

By Phillip Miller

As a person of “a certain age” I have found it medically necessary of late to see a dermatologist on a regular basis.

This requires some advanced scheduling, since dermatologists are not easy to access, even in the large metro areas in which most of them practice.

According to Merritt Hawkins’ Survey of Physician Appointment Wait Times, it takes an average of 78 days to schedule a new patient appointment with a dermatologist in Philadelphia. The average is 52 days in Boston, 51 days in Denver, 42 days in Seattle and 35 days in Los Angeles. The average in 15 top metro areas included in the survey is over one month – 32 days.

As with many medical specialties today, demand for dermatologists is exceeding supply, due to an aging and growing population, patient lifestyle choices, and popular new technologies and dermatologic treatments.

These and related trends are the subject of a new Merritt Hawkins white paper entitled, Dermatology: Supply, Demand, Compensation and Recruiting Trends.

The latest in a series of Merritt Hawkins specialty-focused white papers, this new resource examines the current number and demographic composition of dermatologists, explains the factors driving demand for their services, and includes data on current salaries and other incentives being offered to recruit dermatologists.

The white paper also includes steps that hospitals, medical groups, and other healthcare facilities can take to enhance their dermatology recruiting success.
