In 2017, the American Urology Association (AUA) released a report that included some troubling data regarding an emerging shortage of urologists. According to the report, 72% of U.S. counties have either only one or no urologists. The report also noted that the majority of urologists now are 55 years old or older and that a wave of retirements in the specialty can be expected (The State of Urology Work Force and Practice Trends in the U.S. American Urology Association. 2017).

The shortage of urologists is likely to become more acute as both the physician work force and the patient population age. The AUA study further indicated that the majority of visits to urologists are generated by patients 65 years old or older, even though patients in this age group only comprise 14 percent of the population. For these and related reasons, the Healthcare Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has projected a shortage of more than 1,600 urologists by 2025.

Merritt Hawkins addresses these issues in a new white paper entitled Urology: Supply, Demand and Recruiting Trends

The white paper examines the development of urology as a specialty, education and training requirements for urologists, and scope of practice in the specialty. It also examines supply, demand and compensation trends in urology. The white paper concludes with recommendations for how hospitals, medical groups and other entities can best recruit these in-demand specialists.
