A Word Of Thanks On National Doctor's Day

March 30, 2020

National Doctors Day 2020

By Travis Singleton, EVP at Merritt Hawkins

There are approximately 800,000 practicing doctors in America today. Each of them took an oath that states, in part, “I will use treatment to help the sick according to my ability and judgment, but never with a view to injury and wrong-doing.”

Each of them also entered their profession with an understanding of the risks involved. Even in the best of times, physicians routinely are exposed to the sick and spend time in hospitals or other facilities that may harbor all manner of potential health threats.

These are facts that we, as patients, tend to forget. One of the few potential positives of the coronavirus pandemic is that it may remind people of the vital role physicians play and their willingness to put themselves at risk for the sake of their patients. It is inspiring to see physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals sacrificing their personal time and potential safety to treat COVID-19 patients under very trying circumstances, sometimes with inadequate protection for themselves.

Unfortunately, some physicians and other healthcare providers are paying a high price for their commitment, but they continue to stay on the front lines of the battle against this pandemic. They are the heroes of the current crisis, much as first responders were the heroes of 9/11. This year’s National Doctor’s Day should hold more meaning for all of us.

This National Doctor’s Day is therefore one that clearly should resonate with all Americans. There are few occupations whose members understand the pressure of walking into the face of almost certain peril, but do it anyway, without pause, for the greater good of us all. I am thankful for our physicians and first responders every day, but we all should show that gratitude today, on their day.

We certainly do at Merritt Hawkins, where we have the privilege of working with physicians every day and seeing the enormous positive impact they have on their communities and on their patients.

Merritt Hawkins salutes America’s physicians on National Doctor’s Day and we wish safety and good health for them, their family members and their patients.
