Every other year, Merritt Hawkins conducts a national Survey of Final-Year Medical Residents
examining the practice plans and preferences of physicians about to complete
their training. The 2019 version of
this survey revealed that new physicians are swamped with job offers. Sixty-six percent of those surveyed
indicated they had been contacted by recruiters about job opportunities 51 or
more times during the course of their training, while 45 percent had been
contacted 100 or more times.
Few new physicians, however, indicated that they are ready
to handle the business side of medicine. Only 8 percent of those surveyed said they are “very prepared” to assess
employment contracts, compensation arrangements and other aspects of employment
they need to know to accurately evaluate practice opportunities.
