After experiencing unprecedented population growth over the past several decades, with over two million residents and 40 million annual visitors, Las Vegas has become the largest city in the country without a dedicated allopathic medical school. Recognizing the strong community and regional need for additional physicians and the opportunity afforded by such a growing and diverse community, UNLV officially approved the establishment of a new medical school in August 2014. Just this past July 2017, the school accepted their charter class of 60 medical students with full scholarships offered to the entire class.
Capitalizing on partnerships with community hospitals, the VA Medical Center, community physicians and established programs on the UNLV campus, the SOM will seek to become a national leader in inter-professional and team-based learning utilizing state-of-the-art technology and science coupled with a patient-centered approach to health care. Clinical and population-based research programs will be a strong focus, with particular areas of opportunity in the fields of neuroscience, women’s health, cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, behavioral health and addiction.
The successful Department Chair candidate will possess a medical degree from an accredited medical school, be board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as have additional certifications from the American Board of Medical Specialties for applicable subspecialty training, be eligible for appointment as an associate or full professor and have a substantial record of leadership and achievement in academic medicine and medical education. S/He will build collaborative relationships and grow innovative programs, particularly in subspecialty areas; continue to recruit outstanding faculty and staff; and expand and build upon the partnerships in this uniquely pivotal venture. The Chair must demonstrate the ability to effectively steward department resources; understand, appreciate, and guide the development of training and research programs; establish productive working relationships with university administrators, faculty, staff, students, and alumni; effectively support the distinct academic and clinical partnerships; and be able to represent the department and medical school in the various regional and national committees.
