The newly opened Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine (WMed) is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the Chair of Family and Community Medicine. The new medical school is a collaboration involving Western Michigan University, a top 100 national public doctoral university in the U.S., and two award-winning teaching hospitals, nationally recognized for innovation and quality. WMed is one of the few U.S. medical schools in several decades to be built entirely from the ground up. The inaugural class of 54 students will be graduating in 2018! WMed is supported by private gifts, clinical revenue, research activity, student tuition, and endowment income. In March 2011, Western Michigan University received a gift of $100 million for the medical school from the Stryker family.
Opened in June 2014, the medical school's new 350,000 square foot educational building underwent a $68 million renovation and expansion including a new state-of-the-art 24,000 square foot Simulation Center to promote SBL curriculum with 8 simulation rooms, procedure labs, task trainer rooms, 12 standardized patient exam rooms, and 6 classrooms. There is an established Center for Clinical Research which allows opportunities and resources for developing clinical research programs. The medical school has more than 200 residents and fellows in eight residency and two fellowship programs. Over 100 employed faculty and more than 200 community physicians are involved in medical school teaching and research programs. WMed Clinics provide more than 58,000 outpatient visits annually in primary care and subspecialty clinics with a full range of on-site ancillary services.
The successful Department Chair candidate will have a substantial record of leadership and achievements in academic medicine and education; possess an MD or MD/PhD; be board certified in Family Medicine; be qualified for appointment at the rank of associate professor or full professor; and be eligible for a license in the state of Michigan.
