Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine seeks a visionary family physician leader who can build and manage external relationships with community health partners and understands the importance of fostering a supportive academic workplace culture. Reporting to the CEO and Dean of Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to open a new outpatient primary care location that will enable the family medicine faculty, fellows, and residents to continue providing care to a diverse, underserved population in the City of Kalamazoo. Additionally, the candidate will direct the clinical and educational operations at Grace Health in nearby Battle Creek. 

Key Position Responsibilities:
  • Successfully partner and expand upon external relationships to enhance the Department of Family and Community Medicine's impact on the underserved communities of southwest Michigan.
  • Recruit and retain future top talent primary care providers to provide excellent care to the citizens of Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties.
  • Commit to nurturing a diverse, inclusive, and culturally sensitive clinical practice and learning environment for providers, trainees, and patients.
  • Build a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence to become a nationally recognized academic program for serving vulnerable populations. 
  • Oversee two clinical locations and privileges at three area hospitals with a total of 17 faculty, and two ACGME accredited residency programs with a total of 45 residents. The department also has fellowship programs in Sports Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Care. 

  • MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree required.
  • Board certified in Family Medicine.
  • Licensed or eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the state of Michigan.
  • Academic credentials appropriate for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Broad understanding of academic medical centers, faculty roles, organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Substantial record of leadership and achievements in academic medicine and education.
  • Experience and ability to obtain grant funding.
  • Experience conducting outcomes-based research and leading the department’s strategic direction in building research capacity.
